Last week, the United States Supreme Court decreed that, “The Constitution does not confer a right to abortion.” The decision strikes down the 1973 Roe v. Wade finding of a woman’s “qualified right to terminate her pregnancy” — the qualifier being the government’s “legitimate interests in protecting both the pregnant woman's health and the potentiality of human life.” In other words, it’s complicated.

Just last month, following a leaked draft of the court’s landmark ruling, Gallup found that 50% of Americans believe that abortion should only be legal under certain circumstances, with an additional 13% who believe that abortion should be banned. But nuance is the first casualty of the culture wars. Congresswoman Jackie Speier is ready for battle. As the California Democrat declared on MSNBC, “There is a war out there, and we need to recognize that we’ve got to armor up,” despite her support for stricter gun control. NBC News political analyst Susan Del Percio warns that America could descend into "political violence" not seen in over 100 years.

The spiral has already begun. According to Senator Chuck Grassley, even before Friday’s ruling, protesters staged “at least 40 violent attacks on crisis pregnancy centers, religious institutions, and other pro-life entities.” Domestic terrorists calling themselves “Jane’s Revenge” promise, “If abortion isn’t safe, neither are you.” If, as the Washington Post’s banner famously proclaims, democracy dies in darkness, America has entered the twilight zone.
