"Move over, Ryan Gosling," columnist Catherine Rampell squeals on the pages of the Washington Post. Last week, a hot new sex symbol burst onto the scene: Vice President Kamala Harris' husband, Doug Emhoff. Until his prime time convention tribute, the Second Husband was largely ignored by the political press, a mere sidekick to a sidekick that many Democratic operatives earlier wanted kicked off the 2024 presidential ticket. But in the glow of his wife's coronation, Emhoff has achieved celebrity crush status. Underneath his middle aged spread, the 59-year-old lawyer is a "hunk" and a "dreamboat" who, Rampell gushes, embodies the "modern female fantasy."

In a town that Clinton operative Paul Begala once dubbed "Hollywood for Ugly People," the partisan press finds inspiration where it can. Comedy Central host Jon Stewart once confessed to Massachusetts senator Elizabeth Warren, "I know your husband’s backstage. I still wanna make out with you."

In 2012, Politico reported that Joe Biden was allegedly "bringing sexy back" with his "piercing blue eyes and a wide smile." And Barack Obama hardly needed to be photographed emerging from the surf shirtless in just his swim trunks to send media pulses racing. Even former secretary of state John Kerry was hailed a "weapon of mass seduction" in 2015 by Switzerland's "24 Heures." Sadly for the globe trotting Democrat, when he ran for president in 2004, American voters did not agree.
